It has been amazing to watch the presidential
race over the last few weeks and to consider
what gives a certain candidate the advantage.
Certainly, there is an element of reputation
that
comes into the equation, but more than
anything it is about the verbal ability and
non-verbal presence of each candidate that
sets him or her apart. Call it charisma, call it
presence, or call it EDGE......it's what makes
us vote for one over another.
So, the question is, are you personally doing
everything you can to give yourself a
competitive edge? Here are some presentation
tips to do exactly that.

| Do's and Don'ts |
 |
|
Elements that work:
- Information that the audience cares
about.
- Passionate, convincing delivery.
- Stories well told, with relevant points
made.
- The addition of relevant information from
current events.
- Including your audience by asking
questions, both rhetorical and direct.
- Body language that illustrates a point
and does not distract the audience.
- Eye contact that is calm and inclusive
and not "scanning" or "shifty".
- Vocal variation that enhances the
presentation and creates interest.
- Humor that is relevant (no joke
telling).
- A conclusion that lets your audience know
exactly what you expect them to do with the
information you have just delivered.
Don'ts -- What Doesn't Work
- Preparing your presentation as a
monologue instead of seeing it as a means of
communication. Communication does not only
mean sending
the message, it also emphasizes ensuring that
the information is received in the manner
intended.
- Too much detail.
- Not enough story telling/anecdotes that
make valuable points.
- Irrelevant information.
- Too long.
- Distracting delivery skills -- including
voice and body language -- that undermine the
message.
- A speech that does not focus on an
audience-centered message.
- Too pedantic and formal.
- Lack of preparation.
- Irrelevant information.
